hey
Hi!
this week’s style inspo:
Rihanna at the Met Ball, obviously
what I’m clicking:
Where spring breaks eternal | My misadventure with the magician of Manhattan | The ghost of Big Freedia | The intellectual dark web | Are we ready for robot sex? | A wikipedia page dedicated to feet that routinely wash ashore in the Pacific Northwest | How much is that sneaker in the window? | Fererro Rocher as a (delicious) immigrant status symbol
what I’m watching:
The Rachael Dolezal documentary. I was confused about why somebody would give this sewer dweller a platform, but watching this was so fascinating and baffling. It's an emotional roller coaster of pity, disgust, shame, confusion, forgiveness (?!?!?!?), but mostly pity. I feel bad that she had such a horrific childhood and I feel bad for her children and siblings who had to be sucked into this whole charade. But the most interesting part to me was hearing from the people in her life (mostly people of color) who still love and support her. For such an obtuse idiot, she’s strangely articulate and honestly sort of a talented artist? Please watch this so we can be confused about it together!
what I’m reading:
Marguerite van Geldermalsen
The two types of memoirs in the world are people who have an interesting life but aren’t necessarily writers and people who have nothing to write about but somehow do so wonderfully. This book falls into the first category, since it’s about a woman who went to Petra, slept in some random dudes cave, and then never left.
Did it make me cry: No.
Did it make me laugh: No.
Did it make me miss a subway stop: No.
Would I recommend it: It’s totally eye-opening and fascinating, but do not read this unless you plan to visit Petra. Also, do not visit Petra without reading this.
Would I read it again: No.
Would it be a good movie: No. There's no footage for a documentary and a feature film would be lame.
Leila Slimani
Based on the horrifying true story of the New York City nanny who stabbed two children to death (and just got a life sentence for it) this Frenchified version does an excellent job of making you slowly terrified of somebody.
Did it make me cry: No.
Did it make me laugh: No - too scary.
Did it make me miss a subway stop: No.
Would I recommend it: Yes, as long as you don’t have children. It will give you nightmares.
Would I read it again: No.
Would it be a good movie: Yessssss such a good creepy thriller. Why hasn’t this been made into a movie yet?
what I’m reading right now
Game of Thrones (it’s gonna be awhile).
the best book I read in…
March: History of Wolves
February: Homesick for Another World
January: Anthropology of an American Girl
what’s on my bookshelf waiting to be read:
We Were Eight Years in Power
Killers of the Flower Moon
The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born
what books are on my list to buy (this will take me months to actually do):
Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien
M Train by Patti Smith
That Patty Hearst book
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
What Belongs to You by Garth Greenwell
I Love Dick (which is being made into a TV show by Jill Soloway!)
After interviewing Helen Ellis, I added a few books from her “classic trashy” book club to my list.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation
Stranger Things Happen
