it's been a while
Hello, here’s some stuff:
this week’s style inspo:
These fancy ladies from a Georges Melies act
what I’m clicking:
My friend Linden wrote this beautiful piece about their top surgery for the NYT - it’s called All In One Piece | The stylish grandmas of instagram | The capitalist history of the straw, and why straw bans hurt those with disabilities | Instagram influencers are driving luxury hotels crazy | How fortnite became the most popular video game on earth (side note: my tween brother calls it “overrated”) | What it’s like to date in a small mountain town | The 5 stages of almost missing your flight | Saudi women behind the wheel | A feminist’s guide to responsible summer travel and what it means to decolonize travel| Another boring story about the scheduling conflicts of an open marriage | The summer of JOMO
what I’m coveting:
A pair of Ranjana Khan earrings
what I’m listening to:
The horrifying/fascinating story of the rise and fall of Bikram Yoga on the 30 for 30 podcast
what I’m wanderlusting:
Costa Rica’s Territorio de Zaguates
what I’m writing about:
South Africa’s Best-Kept Secret
what I’m reading:
Judy Blundell
This book is a super juicy beach read, but my main issue with it is that I hated all the characters.
Did it make me cry: No.
Did it make me laugh: I think so?
Did it make me miss a subway stop: No.
Would I recommend it: I would HIGHLY recommend it if you’re familiar with the North Fork or the Hamptons, otherwise it’s pretty “meh”
Would I read it again: Nope.
Would it be a good movie: No. Everyone is too unlikeable. It would be really fun to cast though.
The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born
Ayi Kwei Armah
I generally love African literature, but this book (barely a book--more of a novella) just didn’t have enough character development. I felt like it was the kind of book that teachers would assign to high schoolers.
Did it make me cry: No.
Did it make me laugh: No.
Did it make me miss a subway stop: No.
Would I recommend it: No. There are way better books by Ghanian writers!
Would I read it again: No.
Would it be a good movie: No, but the last couple pages of the book are very intense and would be so cinematic. It’s possible this could be a good short film, but there’s no way you can get 2 hours of material out of this thing.
what I’m bookclubbing: Sing, Unburied, Sing. We’ll be discussing next month if you want to join!
the best book I read in…
June: An American Marriage
May: The Perfect Nanny
April: Conversations with Friends
March: History of Wolves
February: Homesick for Another World
January: Anthropology of an American Girl
