~it's friday~
Hello!
this week’s style inspo:
Grace Jones as Zula in Conan the Destroyer
what I’m clicking:
A publishing oasis in the desert | Bill Cunningham’s secret memoir | Native authors on what to read | Amelia Earhart has been found | One very disgusting weekend in Tahoe
Also, I’ve sort of become obsessed with Ottessa Moshfegh (author of Eileen and Homesick for Another World). She is fascinating. Here’s an interview with her in the Guardian that is absolutely insane. And even weirder, here she is being interviewed by her fiance.
what I’m wanderlusting:
what I’m coveting:
what I’m watching:
I read this piece about Tonya Harding a few weeks ago and I was struck by the fact that she sold her life rights for $1500. I wasn’t totally sure I wanted to watch the movie, but I finally did and I really loved it. It’s an incredibly enjoyable watch, but it's also a totally devastating story. I highly recommend both I, Tonya and the article.
what I’m reading:
I’m slogging my way through Game of Thrones one 900-page book at a time, but I won’t bore you with the details until I’m done with the series (...if the final books ever get published). Here’s what I’m reading in between epics:
Emily Fridlund
This is one of those books where they tell you the ending on the first page but STILL you cannot put it down because it’s such an engrossing read. It’s like quicksand.
Did it make me cry: No, but it’s pretty sad.
Did it make me laugh: No.
Did it make me miss a subway stop: No.
Would I recommend it: Yes. It’s one of those books where every character is unlikeable but you’re still so drawn to their story. In ways, it sort of reminds me of Swamplandia in that while I was reading it I was like “why do I care about these people?” and then when I was all over I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Would I read it again: Probably not.
Would it be a good movie: Probably not. It’s much harder to make a good movie with unlikeable characters than it is to make a good book with unlikeable characters.
the best book I read in…
February: Homesick for Another World
January: Anthropology of an American Girl
what’s on my bookshelf waiting to be read:
We Were Eight Years in Power
Killers of the Flower Moon
what books are on my list to buy (this will take me months to actually do):
Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien
M Train by Patti Smith
That Patty Hearst book
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born
What Belongs to You by Garth Greenwell
I Love Dick (which is being made into a TV show by Jill Soloway!)
After interviewing Helen Ellis, I added a few books from her “classic trashy” book club to my list.
My Year of Rest and Relaxation
Stranger Things Happen
