sweet little lies
Hi!
this week’s style inspo:
what I’m clicking:
All the juciest gossip from Quincy Jones | Denouncing the artist | Gun violence is a public health crisis | What color is a tennis ball? (Yellow, duh)
what I’m coveting:
The complete set of Lost In travel guides
what I’m reading:
Carola Lovering
Welcome to the juiciest beach read of 2018. I devoured this book, but full disclosure: I went to college with Carola so reading this book, it was like all these characters I recognized from college had come to life in this really dark way. We have all dated a guy like this (hopefully not as bad) and reading this and recognizing the characters (not just because I know them in real life) made me have such a visceral reaction to this book. There were points where I nearly felt physically ill. And so much of this book is about the dark side of privilege and the things people will do to get what they want - no matter who they hurt.
Did it make me cry: No.
Did it make me laugh: Yes - there are some surprisingly funny parts.
Did it make me miss a subway stop: Almost!
Would I recommend it: Yes! Preorder this book right now. It's not a thriller per se, but I couldn't put it down.
Would I read it again: Maybe?
Would it be a good movie: I would love to see this made into a movie.
Anthropology of an American Girl
Hilary Thayer Hamann
I have a lot of feelings about this book, but I’m not really sure how to articulate them. Did I like this book? I really have no idea. But I think so. And I’d like you to read it so we can talk about it together.
In so many ways it's easy to identify with the main character but you also want to take her by the shoulders and tell her to take her life into her own hands and stop being a pawn. This girl lets people use her and convinces herself it's love.
Did it make me cry: I think I did actually cry at one point.
Did it make me laugh: No. It’s a completely un-funny book.
Did it make me miss a subway stop: No. It’s way too long.
Would I recommend it: I think so! I think to anybody who’s been a teenage girl.
Would I read it again: No. It’s way too long.
Would it be a good movie: I think it could be a gorgeous Sofia Coppola-style teenage dream BUT I’m just not really sure what this movie would be about. New York? Boxing? Love? Drugs? Teenage angst? All of these things?
what’s on my bookshelf waiting to be read:
Anthropology of an American Girl
what books are on my list to buy (this will take me months to actually do):
Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien
Hot Milk by Deborah Levy
M Train by Patti Smith
That Patty Hearst book
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born
What Belongs to You by Garth Greenwell
I Love Dick (which is being made into a TV show by Jill Soloway!)
After interviewing Helen Ellis, I added a few books from her “classic trashy” book club to my list.
