today was supposed to be different
Hello!
Here’s what I’ve been up to this week. Remember, you can always forward this email to a friend and have them sign up at this link: http://tinyletter.com/theodora
this week’s style icon:
Te Fiti, from Disney’s Moana
what I’m clicking:
The accidental getaway driver | The only trivia game that sounds fun | A book I definitely am not interested in reading | And one I kind of am | The loneliest road in America | The now-infamous NYT oped about tomboys | And the angry response
what I’m wanderlusting:
The shark-infested waters of Reunion Island and all the chic little French hotels there.
what I’m eating:
Michel et Augustin cookies. The first time I saw these was a few months ago at an airport and now I’m seeing them everywhere. They taste sort of like a fancy Twix bar and I love them.
what I’m coveting:
This totally nonsense bag from Cult Gaia.
what I’m reading:
Maria Semple
Maria Semple might be a “rich people problems” writer, but there’s something about her that I love anyways. This book started out as something very shallow and insipid, but about halfway through you realize that there’s something deeper and a little bit scary going on.
Did it make me laugh: Yes. I really enjoy her mean streak.
Did it make me miss a subways stop: I didn’t read it on the subway.
Would I recommend it: Not to everybody. You definitely have to be in the mood for something smart and darkly funny.
Would I read it again: No.
Would it be a good movie: There’s a certain level of ridiculousness that I don’t think would work very well on screen. It’s a little too slapstick and sitcom-y to be a good movie. I would be fun to watch though.
what I’m reading right now:
H Is For Hawk. So far I find it totally and incredibly boring, so I also picked up The Gargoyle Hunters, which has a serious City on Fire vibe. I’m into it.
the best book I read in April:
the best book I read in March:
the best book I read in February:
The Bone Clocks and Days of Abandonment
the best book I read in January:
what’s on my bookshelf waiting to be read:
what books are on my list to buy (this will take me months to actually do):
Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien
Hot Milk by Deborah Levy
Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
M Train by Patti Smith
That Patty Hearst book
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson
The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born
What Belongs to You by Garth Greenwell
I Love Dick (which is being made into a TV show by Jill Soloway!)
After interviewing Helen Ellis, I added a few books from her “classic trashy” book club to my list.
What are you reading? (You can reply to this email and tell me)
