this week’s style inspo:
André Leon Talley, RIP
what I’m clicking:
The metaverse landrush is an illusion | Let the green m&m be a nasty little slut | The joys and challenge of sex after 70 | Marriage requires amnesia | Or, maybe your marriage just sucks | I didn’t know who John Mulaney or his wife was before he got his stalker pregnant, but I’ve chosen her (and her haunted dollhouse) in the divorce | The age of the unique baby name | When girl power gets sober | Wordle is a love story | Please, in this infinite time of darkness, let us have wordle | The case against the Trauma Plot | Hanya Yanigahara’s audience of one | The Lindy way of living | A syllabus for the end of the world | A syllabus for the new world | Everyone thinks they are the underdog
what I’m wanderlusting:
A perfect little beach town somewhere in the jungle.
what I’m watching:
I loved Yellowjackets, please talk to me about Yellowjackets.
what I’m coveting:
I haven’t fed my eyewear addiction in QUITE some time (read: two months), so I keep checking on these sunglasses to see if they’ve gone on sale.
what i’m recommending:
My winter dog-walking necessities: 1. lightweight crampons that fit on any shoe 2. these gloves that I can wear while using my phone. Many gloves claim that you can use your phone with them on, but they never ever work for me. Plus, the grippies on the fingers help with pulling apart the poo bags (if you know, you know) 3. these PUFFY CROCS
what I’m reading:
Lucy Tan
Have I already told you 10,000 times that I love books about expats? I love books about expats. This one is especially good because it’s about Chinese-American expats who move to China and don’t quite fit in with the other American expats or the other Chinese citizens and it also has a dash of Pachinko-style EPIC MULTIGENERATIONAL DRAMA, which pushed it over the top from a fun read to a fun read that’s actually good. If you loved The Expatriates, you’ll love this book too (I hope).
Would I recommend it: YES
Rachael Rhys
I think historical fiction is twee, but when you combine it with a murder mystery and a glamorous around-the-world cruise, I kind of can’t resist. This book scratched an itch I didn’t know I had and I would watch the hell out of the TV miniseries adaptation.
Would I recommend it: A LITTLE!
Orson Scott Card
This book is essentially Harry Potter for straight boys (a bunch of kids find out they’re special and go to a secret boarding school, hijinks ensue), but instead of wizards they are video game prodigies. This book was SO FUN to read, but I will not be reading any of the sequels. And I suggest you don’t make the same mistake that I did and watch the movie. It’s bad.
Would I recommend it: SORTA
Anton DiSclafani
This is one of those books that I somehow think would be way better as a movie but it’s still very fun to read if you like books about rich people behaving badly.
Would I recommend it: NOT REALLY
Liv Constantine
I read about 200 pages of this book thinking it was one of the most pointless things ever published but then! It did that thing where the narrative flips and I couldn’t put it down. In the end it was mostly just sad and I regretted reading it, but for a few minutes, I was so horrified I couldn’t look away. Major trigger warnings for this book, folks. Basically all the trigger warnings.
Would I recommend it: NO
Catherine Steadman
I found this book to be extremely disappointing but that’s probably my fault for expecting it to be something it just wasn’t (a juicy beach read about a crime-ridden vacation somewhere fabulous). It’s exciting to read, but everything about it is just way too unbelievable. I feel like this is the “chick lit” version of a John le Carre novel.
